ARTIST STATEMENT
My approach as a director is to have meaningful professional relationships with my actors where they feel seen, heard, and respected. I will encourage deep character work where they begin to understand the relationship between themselves and their character and unite the strengths of each. By showing appreciation for actors and working to keep them from feeling isolated or lacking support, my hope is that they will embody their character throughout the rehearsal process. Each actor under my leadership will feel empowered to explore their artistry while I guide them to the overall vision I have established for the show. My expectation is that everyone should be excited to be there, support each other, do outside rehearsal work, and commit to professional growth to achieve our end goal. However, I will always leave room for mistakes and for exploring new ideas. For every project I lead, I will be passionate and maintain a high level of engagement to the very end. When a director shares the love and passion for a show, it pushes every person to embrace that same passion. It motivates, challenges, and inspires each person to reach that level. I believe in the balance of giving precise directions while also letting the actor have creative freedom. As I communicate my vision to each actor, I will continue to find new ways to expound upon that vision until every actor embraces it. For some, they need to discuss; whereas for others, they benefit more from coaching, instruction, experimentation, or constructive criticism. I strive to understand each actor and adjust my approach as needed. I will not cling to my vision so tightly that the actors feel powerless to make any valuable contribution. However, through this process, my goal is that we come together with a unified vision and passion for the show, which is so much greater than I could have developed on my own.
I am a director who develops a solid plan, has a schedule, works efficiently, and knows what I intend to accomplish every day. It is extremely important that I value my actors', stage managers', designers', and producer’s time. As a director, I must frequently assess rehearsal components and determine when certain moments need more time in the room than others. I will strive to be in constant communication with designers and creatives so that we all know of changes and developments throughout the entire rehearsal process which is crucial for a successful show. For casting a show, I try to have an open mind and have the foresight to see potential in a person before perfection. I look for that person who is willing to work hard in order to achieve success by opening night. Ultimately, I am an advocate for the audience. Despite my vision, my actors, my creatives, or anyone else involved in the production, the final show needs to resonate and affect the audience. I am and desire to grow as a director who is consistent, professional, relational, respected, and passionate about the art of telling a story.
